Car Brake Specialist

Brakes are the most important safety feature in your car. One of the easiest ways to tell if they’re working properly is to check your brake warning light. If it’s on, they need attention.

That’s simple enough. But what about the less-obvious warning signs? If you experience any of these signs, you should have your brakes checked by a specialist:

  • Your car loses grip when braking
  • Your car pulls to the left or right when braking
  • Your brake pedal is low, hard, soft or spongy
  • Your steering wheel shudders when you brake
  • Your brakes screech or squeal
  • Your car takes longer to stop than normal

Alexandra Garage carries a wide range of brake replacement parts to suit most popular makes and models. More importantly, the technical expertise of our brake repair specialists ensures you’ll leave with your brakes in top condition.

And for total peace of mind, our work is backed by the Midas 12-month, 20,000km nationwide guarantee.

When you apply pressure to your brake pedal, this is what happens: the pressure forces brake fluid to engage a series of mechanisms that push the brake pad onto the disc rotor (which is attached to the wheel assembly) bringing your car to a stop. The brake pad is mounted to a brake calliper, which is the part that applies and releases the brake pads from the disc rotor.

The calliper comprises a housing, inside which is a piston that moves back and forth when you apply and releases the brakes. Rubber parts inside the calliper ensure that hydraulic fluid does not leak from it.

If your vehicle’s callipers have not been overhauled for some time, your Midas brakes repairs specialist may recommend this service when replacing brake pads in Brisbane, Melbourne, and countrywide. They’ll always explain the reason why.

Although you do not always need to overhaul callipers in axle sets (pairs), doing so can result in more balanced braking and extended brake-pad life.

A disc rotor is the circular metal plate that your brake pad presses against to stop the car. The smoother the surface of the disc rotor, the more efficient the braking. So, when new brake pads are fitted, machining of disc rotors ensures maximum braking efficiency.

After thousands of braking applications, disc rotors wear, usually unevenly. For effective braking, new brake pads should fit flush against the disc rotor. That’s why your disc rotors should be machined by a Midas specialist.

Car Suspension and Shock Absorber Service

One main function of your car’s suspension is to provide a smooth, comfortable ride – even when you’re on a bumpy road. However, your suspension’s most important job is to keep all four tyres in firm contact with the road so that steering, driving and braking systems are effective. Without your suspension in good working order, control of the vehicle can become unmanageable and can lead to unfortunate (and fully-avoidable) accidents.

There are many parts working together to ensure your car’s suspension is doing its job. Shock absorbers (or struts) and springs are the main parts, however, it’s important that other parts, including ball joints, tie rod ends and suspension bushes are in good condition.

If any of these parts are worn, your suspension system becomes ineffective and this is incredibly unsafe. For example, just one worn shock absorber means you may need up to 2.6-metres longer to stop the vehicle. That could be the difference between stopping safely or crashing.

Here is a list of some of the things that can occur when your shock absorbers or struts are worn. If any of these happen to you, it’s time to get them replaced.

  • Car dips forward when braking
  • Tyres show evidence of unusual tread wear
  • Shock absorbers are leaking fluid
  • Car doesn’t handle properly around corners

Alexandra Garage carries a wide range of shock absorbers, springs, struts and suspension replacement parts. More importantly, the technical expertise of our auto service experts ensures you’ll leave with your car’s suspension in top condition. And for total peace of mind, our work is backed by the famous Midas Nationwide Guarantee.

It should be emphasised that leaving your vehicle suspension unchecked for an extended period of time is not advised and can lead to unfortunate circumstances, especially if you drive with children. For peace of mind, even if you have a small concern that perhaps your suspension or tyres are not in good working order, take your car into one of our branches nationwide. Your vehicle will be assessed by our professionals and then you can drive off knowing you have done all you can to ensure your car is in good, safe condition.

Car Exhaust and Muffler Repair and Service

There’s one very obvious way to tell if your exhaust needs repairing. It makes a louder noise than you are accustomed to or to what you expect it should be making. Don’t let it reach the point in which your neighbors run for cover when you start your car in the morning!

However, the warning signs of a worn exhaust system are not always so obvious and no matter what anyone tells you, a problem exhaust will affect your car’s performance. Therefore, we strongly suggest that you have your car’s exhaust system checked regularly by a specialist. And it goes without saying that Alexandra Garage has specialist, experienced and fully-qualified mechanics and technicians on site to manage and repair your entire exhaust system.

Since 1986, car manufacturers have been required by law to fit all new passenger vehicles with catalytic converters. A catalytic converter transforms harmful exhaust gases into elements which are environmentally friendly. In other words, it takes out the nasties.

These poisonous pollutants are actually converted into harmless nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water by your catalytic converter. Ultimately, it ensures what comes out of your exhaust pipe won’t harm Mother Nature.

You can see why it’s so important to have it in full working order!

If you want better performance from your car, the exhaust system is a good place to start.

Extractors are an inexpensive way to boost the power of your engine. You’ll be surprised at the difference.

At Midas, we carry a range of extractors for many vehicles, and extra power is just one of the advantages they offer. Here are a few more that apply:

  • Increased power for towing
  • Your engine runs cooler
  • Improved fuel economy
  • More torque from your 4WD

We have a range of exhausts to suit over 2,000 different vehicles (including European and 4WD models) which can be expertly fitted to your car. We keep your car performing at maximum efficiency and prevent dangerous fumes from entering your car. Unlike many others, Alexandra Garage guarantees all our exhaust parts and workmanship.

The purpose of an oxygen sensor is to detect and measure the amount of oxygen that is being expelled into the exhaust gas. It then sends this information to the engine management computer.

The computer needs this information to automatically adjust the air/fuel mixtures to the correct level to ensure that the vehicle does not run too rich or too lean. The oxygen sensor is located in the exhaust system of the engine.

An oxygen sensor usually needs replacing from 100,000kms to 150,000kms depending on the make & model of vehicle.

Engine Service

Even when you perform regular car servicing, you can still develop engine problems due to your engine management system. Most cars later than 1989, have a car engine computer (ECU).

When you have problems with your car not starting or an intermittent problem or a warning engine light has come on, we can diagnose the problem and then rectify it. Our car engine technicians can check your entire engine management system using a Scan Tool loaded with software on the latest models to read fault codes and live data.

We also use computerized tuning & Dyno tuning machine to help diagnose the problem and repair it. It may need as little as re-setting or an engine sensor replaced, on the other hand, it may need a new engine management computer, but a correct diagnosis will not waste your money.

Engine & Components

Sometimes the problem goes beyond the simple preventative maintenance measures that can be taken and major mechanical work is required. Work such as this can range from replacement of engine mounts, oil pumps, sumps, camshafts, rear main seal, timing cover seal, manifold to the engine itself.

Our technicians are fully experienced in major mechanical work such as this and we can provide these services at a competitive rate.

If necessary, our technicians can perform an Engine Reconditioning service.

In our car service, we check for oil leaks, engine mounts condition & engine wear.
